Navy Players Make an Impact at Bristol

Navy Players Make an Impact at Bristol

The impact made by Navy players in their first year playing in the Bristol Pitbulls organisation in the English National League South was recognised at the end of season awards dinner.

Lt John Rutter, a pilot with the 845 Naval Air Squadron based at RNAS YEOVILTON, was selected as the Pitbulls defenceman of the year for the 2011-2012 season in his first season at Bristol. Rutter impressed coaching staff with his steady play which saw him finish the year as one of the most trusted members of the Pitbulls blueline team. 'JR' also managed 4 assists for 4 points, most of them obtained during a very busy and intense final stretch of the season when the Pitbulls were locked in a tight battle for position in Division II South. His calm and quiet demenour coupled with his dedicated work ethic also made him popular amongst his teamates who voted him their ‘Player’s Player’ of the year.

Another Navy player also made a subtle impact.  Lt Cdr Alain Bernard, a hydrographic specialist working at the Defence Maritime Geospatial Intelligence Centre at the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office in Taunton, played a utility role throughout the season, splitting his time between playing a defensive checking role up front and filling in on defence when injuries decimated the back pairings.  He also took on the role of one of the team’s alternate captains halfway through the season contributing a calming influence amongst the younger players in the dressing room.  His contribution to the organisation merited him the ‘Manager’s Player’ of the year award. Bernard would also accummulate 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points and at 42, Bernard was also the oldest player in ENL2 South during the 2012 season.

Both Rutter and Bernard were thankful to Bristol Manager Richie Hargreaves for giving service players a chance in his organisation.  Both intend to return to the squad for the 2012-2013 season and hope to continue to contribute to the teams progress. After both ENL1 and ENL2 teams struggled in 2010-2011, Hargreaves managed to improve the fortunes of both sides in 2011-2012; the ENL1 side finished 6th and made the playoffs and the ENL2 side went from last to a respectable 8th place amongst 13, only 6 points off 4th place.

Navy Defenceman Player of the Month for Pitbulls ENL2 Squad

Navy Defenceman Player of the Month for Pitbulls ENL2 Squad

Lieutenant John Rutter, a pilot with 845 Naval Air Squadron, Commando Helicopter Force based at Royal Navy Air Station Yeovilton is enjoying an excellent first season with the Bristol Pitbulls in English National League Division 2 South.

His work ehtic and consistent high standard of play has been praised by Pitbulls Head Coach Richie Hargreaves: "I know Rutter will always give 100%, and I can count on him to execute the game plan I've put forward. His addition to the squad has helped provide depth and consistency and is an important factor in why the team has improved over last year".

Lieutenant Rutter has merited the honour of 'man of the match' on 2 occasions this year and his hard work and strong performance was recognised once again last week-end when he was selected Bristol's ENL2 'Player of the Month' for February. Rutter contributed to his regular strong defensive play by adding a few assists to his record over 7 games.  February was probably the most gruelling month for Bristol's team with a large number of games in a short period of time. With a number of injuries afflicting the squad, Rutter's ice time increased and he coped well with the added pressure. In addition, Rutter also competed for the Fleet Air Arm in the Royal Navy Cup (see previous article) and was named to the Combined Services Squad travelling to Finland at the end of March to take on the Finnish Forces team.

Marines take second straight Xmas Cup

The Royal Marines defeated the Navy in the second annual Xmas Cup held 13 Dec at Gosport.

After jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the first, the Marines saw their matelot counterparts fight back to equal the score after 40 minutes. An accidental errant stick would take out Navy 'ancient' Alain Bernard making a return appearance in Blue for the friendly fixture; he would not return to the ice and a short trip to AE would leave him with 6 stiches improving his appearance.

The bootnecks would regroup and some strong inspirational words would motivate the dark green to pick up where they had left off in the first.  Four unanswered goals would seal the RN's fate.  After 60  inutes of play, RM 9 - 5 RN.

Marines claim 3rd straight RN title

Over 40 hockey players from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Fleet Air Arm traveled to Gosport for the 3rd Annual Royal Navy Championships.

It was good to see some new faces take to the ice, and some old ones return in order to partake in some friendly but intense competition for the bragging rights within the senior service.

This year, in order to help space out games, members of the Southampton University Spitfires were invited to participate.  There is a close and amicable relationship between the Navy and Southampton Uni hockey teams at Gosport, so it was nice to be able to thank them for their support at sessions by providing the opportunity for some ice time against the service teams.

The round robin competition saw the Navy and Marines win their first 2 games against the Fleet Air Arm and University sides, setting the scene for a climactic winner take all final game between the 2 rivals, the winner would be crowned 2012 RN Champion.

After a full day of hockey, fatigue was starting to show on both sides. There were few scoring chances in a tight checking affair, neither team wanting to concede the advantage. Mne Brandon Hubbs would finally get one past Navy keeper Alex Blackshaw midway through the first period.  Marine team captain Cpl John 'moose' Underwood would also find the back of the net a few minutes after with an accuate low shot which seemed to steer itself through heavy traffic in front of the Navy net to beat Blackshaw low stick side.

Both teams took the opportunity to catch their breath during the intermission before returning to the ice for the final period.  The matelots came out hard, keen to claw back at the 2-goal deficit but Musn Jon Booth would slam the door shut in the marines' net, turning away every shot he faced.

As the ice began to slow from the accumulation of snow from some hard skating over the first 30min of play, the pace of the Navy attack started to reduce, providing the marines with a few chances.  Mne Hubbs would add a second goal to give the bootnecks a 3-0 lead with only a few minutes remaining.  He would complete his hat trick with another goal on the final buzzer.  Final score, Royal Marines 4, Royal Navy 0.

The Fleet Air Arm made an excellent showing with a number of new players making their first appearance, many from succesful Grass Roots Sports Events.  Lt John Rutter was satisfied of the performance of his young team noting that they improved in each game they played.
