Matelots take on Bootnecks in annual Xmas Cup

Matelots take on Bootnecks in annual Xmas Cup

The Annual RM v RN Xmas Cup match will take place Tue 13 Dec 11 at 1300.  The Bootnecks have not lost to their Matelots counterparts in 6 head-to-head matches since the Marines won the inaugural RN Cup in Feb 09.

Both teams should be sporting full line-ups and the action is set to be fast-paced; the Navy are keen to get in the 'W' column for the first time and the Commandos want to maintain their bragging rights.

Admission is free for the 1300 face-off.

2011-2012 Season Underway

2011-2012 Season Underway

The 2011-2012 RN Ice Hockey season is well underway with the Kings taking on the Southampton University Spitfires in a friendly in-house scrimmage this week-end.  As per every year, the drive to register players has been an onearous task, made even more difficult by the significant number of sailors and marines away on operations across the Globe.

In order to enable the sport to continue to grow, the RNIHA leadership have put forward a few new proposals to help those located outside the Portsmouth area access RNIHA activities.  Among these are discussions to start a RNIHA 'pond hockey' session in Plymouth and investigations into the feasibility of running a RN hockey camp at a venue yet to be determined.

Finally, the RNIHA has encouraged some its top-end players to try-out for League teams across the UK.  Five RN players managed to make the Bristol ENL2 squad, 2 of which were in the line-up for a recent 7-5 loss to the Gosport Devils.  The ENL2 Division 2 South fixture highlighted the contribution made by Navy players to the Bristol squad; the Devils are arguably the best team in the League but Bristol gave them their closest game of the year.  The Navy players provide depth to a squad who finished one from the bottom last year with only 2 wins all season.  The addition of Navy IS players has helped the Pitbulls to a significantly better start with 3 wins in 6 games.  It is hoped that the increased playing time at a high level will translate into a stronger IS team who can reclaim the HM Forces Title.

Kings Finish Disappointing 9th at 2011 EIHA Rec Fest, Blades Claim the Plate and Finish 6th

Kings Finish Disappointing 9th at 2011 EIHA Rec Fest, Blades Claim the Plate and Finish 6th

After the success of 2010 despite only having 7 players, the Kings had hoped to improve on last year's placement with a full squad participating in the 2011 event.

However, despite a strong defensive performance, the Kings struggled to find the back of the net, much as they had in the Tri-service Command and Inter-Service Championships.  They finished the group stages with a record of 1W, 2L and 1T (drawing 1-1 with Don Valley, Winning 2-0 against Norwich but losing 2-0 to Whitley Bay and 2-1 to Blackburn) but the 3 points and good defensive record were enough to see the Kings squeeze through into the Plate. Don Valley and Withley Bay would advance to the Championship while Blackburn would join the Kings in the Plate, attesting to the relatively strength of the group.  The Kings Portsmouth neighbours, Solent Scorpions, managed to advance to the Championship round and finished a well-deserved 3rd overall with a gutsy performance and short bench.

The Kings continued to play well defensively in the Plate but the lack of offence would cost them dearly; although the Senior Service did not allow a goal to the opposition, neither could they get one past the opposition keepers, drawing all their matches 0-0 despite often outplaying the opposition.  The 4 points during the second round would only get them 4th place in the Plate group and 9th overall.

One positive highlight was the opportunity to play the Navy's arch-rivals Army Blades during the second round.  The crowd looked forward to the game which benefitted from the traditional hype which surrounds the famous annual rugby fixture at Twickenham.  The game did not disappoint with some excellent end to end action and physical play which saw the Senior Service narrowly get the edge in play.  However, despite Bernard hitting the post with 5 minutes to play, the Blue and Gold could not get the puck past the Army's Steve Gilmartin and the game ended in a scoreless draw.  This was the 3rd draw between the two service teams since 2006, the most recent at the 2011 Championships where the Blades and Destroyers (the Inter-Service squad) played to a 2-2 draw.

The Army finished top of the Plate Group and finished 6th overall.  The 2 service teams will also be participating in the non-checking version of the competition in Swindon 20-21 August, potentially setting the scene for another exciting match-up. the Whitley Bay Islanders were the Rec Fest overall winners with the Medway Madness claiming the consolation cup.

Navy Rebound In Swindon to Finish 3rd Overall

Navy Rebound In Swindon to Finish 3rd Overall

The Navy took a very short bench to the latest EIHA Rec Section tournament held In Swindon 20-21 August, a non-checking version of the popular annual 'Rec Fest' held in Sheffield.  Only 8 players would make the trip to Wiltshire with 5 players disappointingly reneging on their commitment to participate at the very last minute.

With a majority of marines making up the team, the Navy wore their Inter-Service green away shirts to face the Sheffield Squealers, Milton Keynes Jesters and Cardiff Demons in the first round on Saturday.  As per usual, the Senior Service got off to a slow start against Sheffield, narrowly eking a 2-2 draw from their Yorkshire opponents thanks to a late goal from James Morgan.  At least the Navy had managed to break the goal drought which had afflicted their performance a month previous in Sheffield.  With the cobwebs dusted off, the sailors and marines easily took care of the Cardiff Demons 6-1 before avenging a 7-1 defeat to Milton Keynes Jesters over a year ago with a convincing 4-1 win in Swindon.  The offence was well-spread out across the team and a sound defensive performance by Underwood, Morgan and Rutter on the blue line supported by Weston in net ensured the Navy finished top of the group undefeated with 5 points, easily qualifying for the championship round on Sunday.

In the second day of the event, Navy would face the Swindon Nationwide Knights, Milton Keynes Hurricanes and the Sheffield Squealers who qualified through a gutsy play-off performance at the end of day 1.  The Navy would face the Knights first, the local team supporting a large bench and a number of talented players which meant the dark green would have their hands full for the short fixture.  A lot of hard work and effective defensive play saw the Knights frustrated for the majority of the game until a Knights player made it out past 2 tired Navy players from the corner with only seconds left, connecting with a teamate with a perfect pass to the back post which would see Weston beaten with only 30 seconds left on the clock.  It was a frustrating 1-0 defeat which meant Navy had to win their next 2 games in order to have any chance of taking the title.  The next game against the Hurricanes saw even end to end play, but Navy could not find the back of the net against the 'Canes' goalie - his performance over the 2 days would see him being selected as the best goaltender of the competition.  The game ended in 0-0 draw and effectively ended any chance the Navy had of finishing top in the competition.  The last game would once gain pit the Navy aginst day 1 opponents the Squealers.  As per the previous fixture, the matelots and bootnecks would give up a goal early to go down 1-0.  Despite tired bodies, the Navy was determined to do better than the day before and swarmed the Sheffield goal, but their netminder was having a scorcher and kept the door closed until the last 5 minutes when Bernard and Morgan found the back of the net for a narrow 2-1 win.  The 3 points in the Championship round saw Navy finish 3rd overall, a marked improvement on the 9th place in Sheffield.

The British Army Blades were also participating but could not repeat their Sheffield performance...despite qualifying for the Plate, the Blades finished well out of contention in 7th place (3rd in the Plate).

Kings off to EIHA Rec Section Festival

Kings off to EIHA Rec Section Festival

For the second straight year, the Navy Kings will travel to Sheffield to participate in the EIHA Recreational Section Festival which will see 15 teams from across England compete for the title.

Last year, the Kings posted a surprising 5th place overall despite having only 7 players.  The Kings made it through to the championship group following some good defensive play, opportunistic scoring and solid goaltending.  Their gutsy effort resulted in their being presented the 'spirit of the game' award.

This year, the Kings will be joined by the British Army Blades as service participants and while the Kings hope to travel with a few more players (!), they intend to play in the same way as they did in 2010 and hope to improve on last year's result.
