Game Report Gosport Army v Navy Development Squads 31 Jan 10

Gosport was the venue for the first meeting between the British Army and Royal Navy for 2010; both services sent their developmental sides to the Hampshire rink for a friendly match designed to provide quality ice time for all some of the newest members of each team. As per the norm when Army and Navy face each other on the ice, the game saw some good fierce competition but the play remained clean and in the best spirit of forces hockey. The play remained very close with few chances at either end during the first, both sides tentatively testing each other out in the confined Gosport rink. The Navy would eventually score 3 in the first to take a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.
The second period would resemble the first, with close checking hockey dominating. After 3 more goals from the Navy, the Army came roaring back with 3 goals before the buzzer went at the end of 40 minutes. Score 6-3 after two.
The Navy would be the only team to find the back of the net in the third, adding another 3 goals to take the final score to 9-3. The final scoreline did not really reflect the even play throughout. In the end, the main difference was the Navy's ability to pounce on rebounds in both zones. Navy forwards managed to score 6 of the 9 goals from scrambles near the Army net while the defensive pairings did a good job of clearing the slot in front of returning navy keeper Alex Winfield. Martin Gibson was named the Man of the Match for his relentless forechecking and scrambling near the Army net.
